The John Ringling Fund Individual Artist Fellowship is
designed to recognize practicing, professional,
creative artists residing or working in Sarasota
County through monetary fellowship awards. The
program provides support for artists of exceptional
talent and demonstrated ability, to improve their
artistic skills and enhance their careers.

Brian Haverlock
Born and raised in
North Dakota in the 1970's, Brian Haverlock has lived,
studied, and worked for a significant amount of time
in Winston Salem, NC,
Essex, England, Philadelphia, PA, Syracuse, NY, Costa
Rica, CA, and Washington, DC. In August, 2004,
Haverlock moved to southwestern Florida with his
wife, Christine Caruso. He occupies a small art studio
in
Englewood.
In 1994 Brian Haverlock graduated
from East Carolina University in Greenville, NC with a
BFA in painting. In 1999 his first breakthrough
exhibition was at the Art of the Northeast USA: 50th
Annual Juried Art Exhibition in Connecticut, juried by
Allan Stone of Allan Stone Gallery in New York City.
Since then Haverlock has had opportunities to exhibit
in Allan Stone Gallery and other galleries in New York
and around the country. In May, 2004, Haverlock
completed
an MA in Theology at the Washington Theological
Union in Washington, DC.
Artist’s Statement:
My drawing-paintings are foremost an interior
exploration and a visual expression of my spirituality
as I respond to the world and events around me. I
draw inspiration from life experiences as well as
Sacred Scripture, symbology and art history. I am
also fascinated by the aesthetic qualities of antique
photographs, and so I try to give my artwork that
same appeal. I intentionally make art that is relatively
small in scale, and I try to craft the pieces with a
meticulous precision of detail in order to draw the
viewer to intimacy with the images. That is, I want
the viewer to have to approach my art, to get up
close to see it. In this intimate encounter with the
artwork, the viewer will engage in dialogue with the
subject matter and the meaning of the images
therein. It is with symbolic imagery that I intend to
communicate something of spiritual significance. Art
is a language that can reach people at the gut level
and teach them something meaningful about life and
mystery. It is a language that requires
patient "listening."

Jeff Schwartz
Artist Statement:
With one foot deeply rooted in the tradition of
representational painting and one striving to
reinterpret a modernist aesthetic, I paint images that
are approachable and personal. As realism is not my
goal, I am influenced by the works of Wayne
Thiebaud, David Park, Richard Diebenkorn and Max
Beckman, artists who use observation as a point of
departure rather than a final destination.
Representation is merely a starting point for the work
as I push the scale, manipulate the ground plane,
tweak color and invent a dramatic point of view. My
intention is to create images that move beyond the
formal qualities of observational art; composition,
light, color, materials and space are a spring board to
a new place that transcends formal representation.
Jeff holds an M.F.A from American University,
Washington, DC, a B.F.A from The School of the Art
Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL. He has also studied
at the The Chautauqua Institution School of Art,
Chautauqua, NY, The Vermont Studio Center,
Johnson, VT, as well as at the Lorenzo Di Medici
School of Fine Arts, Florence, Italy.
